Deck Screws vs Construction Screws: What’s the Right Choice?
By Dave KileWhen constructing a deck – or any structure around your home – choosing the correct fastener is essential for the project’s safety and durability. I caution homeowners that they shouldn’t use whatever screws they have on hand. Instead, they need the right fasteners for the right job.
Today, I’ll help you understand the difference between deck screws and construction screws. We’ll go through what they are, how they are different, and the best use for them. I will also answer a few of the more common questions homeowners have about screws, so you can make the right choice for your building project.
Let’s get started in understanding deck and construction screws.
What are Deck Screws?
Made of weather-resistant material, deck screws are specifically designed for securing deck boards to a deck frame. With a larger shank (or post) and deeper thread (the ridge spiraling along the post), a deck screw provides a strong and durable hold. A deck screw can be used in wooden or composite decking and are also good for related outdoor applications such as fencing, posts, railings, or gardening structures.
What are Construction Screws?
For both indoor and outdoor usage, construction screws are for more universal building applications, including framing, subflooring, and drywall. I would describe them as having a smaller shank and shallower thread, but their steel makeup still makes for a firm and lasting hold. You can use them with a variety of materials such as wood, metal, or concrete.
Key Differences Between Deck Screws and Construction Screws
While all screws have the same job of holding things together, they also have key material and size differences that shouldn’t be overlooked. I created the chart below to highlight the main considerations.
Deck Screw |
Construction Screw |
|
Material | Stainless or zinc-coated steel | Various materials, including hardened steel |
Design |
|
|
Corrosion Resistance | High resistance, made for outdoor use | Moderate resistance, made or indoor/outdoor use |
Strength and Load-Bearing Capacity | Long-lasting durability and strength, corrosion resistant | Strong and durable, less resistant to corrosion |
Use | Outdoor structures: decks, fencing, posts, trellises | Multi-purpose: framing, trim, subfloors, drywall |
Cost Considerations | Stainless steel higher price Coated steel lower price |
Less expensive |
Hidden Fasteners
The screw of today is not the same as your grandparent’s screw. Even with this tiny but incredibly necessary product, innovations have improved its finishing look. In places where a screw head would be visible, unattractive, or would compromise quality or safety, I suggest that homeowners consider hidden fasteners or screws. Trex® offers hidden fasteners that secure decking boards to joists while screws stay out of sight. This option is very popular with my customers, providing a polished and smooth aesthetic. Another popular choice is color-matched screws that are coated or painted to match the color of the deck boards. Trex® offers a wide range of color-match options.
Calling in the Pros
Whether you need tools for building a deck or another home improvement or renovation project, understanding all the steps and materials helps ensure your success and safety. I recommend that homeowners who are unsure of their skills should find a builder to assist. Builders can be there for the full scope of the project or called in for portions that may prove trickier than others for a typical homeowner.
Conclusion
In this article, we explored the applications of deck and construction screws.
Selecting between deck screws and construction screws is not just a matter of convenience but a critical decision for ensuring the longevity and safety of your project. Deck screws are specifically designed to withstand outdoor elements and provide a secure hold for decking materials, while construction screws offer versatility for a range of indoor and outdoor applications. By understanding their differences and intended uses, I believe you can confidently choose the correct fasteners for your next build. Investing in the proper screws not only protects your hard work but also ensures a reliable and professional result.
FAQs
Below are some additional considerations for screw selection that homeowners frequently ask.
Can I Use Construction Screws for Decking Projects?
I do not recommend construction screws for decking projects. Deck screws are best for outdoor usage based on their anti-corrosion material. Deck screws also have a longer post and deeper thread, which provide greater penetration into decking boards and more security.
How do I Know What Length Screw to Use for My Project?
In general, the length of your screw should be half the thickness of the material you are securing. For example, if your board is 2 inches thick, then your screw should be 1 inch long. But don’t choose your screw based solely on its length. You need to match the type of screw to the correct type of project, too.
Are There Any Special Coatings for Deck Screws?
Coatings protect screws from the impacts of weather and moisture, so the underlying metal doesn’t rust or corrode. Outdoor screws can be stainless steel or coated steel – typically black steel with a coating. The most common coatings are zinc (also referred to as galvanized due to the way it’s processed) or epoxy. It’s important to use the right screw to minimize the need for maintenance and replacement of screws later.
How Can I Prevent Wood from Splitting When Using Screws?
Wood splitting is a concern when using a screw, but you can take several steps to minimize the risk. Drilling a pilot hole is the best option, making a slightly smaller opening than the screw you will use. You can lubricate the spot of wood with a small amount of wax or oil (like WD40). Lastly, sharp screws are best at reducing splintering.
