Outdoor living spaces have always been popular, but 2019 promises to hold the highest year of growth yet for the residential improvement industry, according to the Freedonia Group Wood and Decking Report. Consumer confidence is high in today’s market, so home improvements like building outdoor living areas are at the top of their priority list.
According to The Nielson Company, the average adult spends about 11 hours a day in front of a screen, so people want a relaxing outdoor space where they can unplug from technology. There are so many creative design trends to create a functional and beautiful outdoor living space.
Here are some popular trends this year.

Minimal urban deck
Comfort and minimalism – To unplug and really unwind, people are looking for cozy elements in their outdoor living areas. Design experts expect to see an increase of cozy throws and plush cushions along with outdoor warming features such as patio heaters and fire pits. Minimalism is on trend now, so less is more when designing your outdoor space. Deck designs feature clean lines, durable products and simple styles.
More usable space – When you install a deck with an under-deck drainage system, you’re not just creating an outdoor living space on your deck. The area below your deck becomes functional and beautiful, doubling your outdoor living! Because the underside of the deck is protected from the elements, you can add features like furnishings, entertainment components, lighting and ceiling fans. Finish off your space beneath the deck with a natural stone patio, completing your outdoor oasis.

Rooftop deck
Non-traditional decks – In 2019, your back yard space doesn’t have to limit you from building a deck. If you own a townhome or condo without sufficient room for a deck in the yard, you may be able to build a rooftop deck. If your yard or house configuration isn’t well-suited for a deck directly off the house, you can add a freestanding deck to create more outdoor living space your yard.

Beautiful step lights
Functional and beautiful lighting options – Lighting built right into your deck can enhance the beauty of your outdoor space and also help you move around safely after dark. In 2019, expect to see modern, energy-efficient lights in post caps, deck sconces, post sconces, and step lights.
